A Few videos from Christmas

A Very Merry Christmas!

We had such a busy, but wonderful Christmas this year. We kicked off our Christmas festivities a few days early with a Smiley family dinner at Aunt Sandy's. Edie had a great time seeing her big cousins! Meanwhile, Young Dr. Smiley (Kate) used Edie as her test subject for a med school pediatric assessment assignment. She determined Edie is indeed 25% in size, and that maybe our pediatrician was even rounding up!

MJ gave us the book "The Elf on the Shelf" this year at the beginning of December. Edie is a little young to really understand it yet, but she did have fun finding the Elf when she got up to see where he was each day. She would get so excited when she would see where he was perched, and point up and say "De, De, De!" We figured we'd wait and let her name the elf later when she can say more then "De!". The Elf must have given Santa a nice report on Edie because despite a rocky visit on Christmas Eve with Santa, he was still pretty good to her.

Is it a new toy bin, or a new hiding spot?

Christmas Eve we went to mass at St. Boniface, and then had Grandpa & MJ, and Uncle Todd & Aunt Breia afterwards for dinner and family game night at our house.

Christmas morning Edie got so excited when she saw everything under the tree, she would hardly eat any breakfast because she wanted to go and check everything out. Santa brought Edie her own little chair, which she loved, and a mini-power wheels jeep. She wasn't all that into unwrapping things this year, but definitely got excited about the actual gifts. As usual, Sadie was the most excited of all of us christmas morning.

After opening gifts at home, we went to MJ's for brunch and spent the day over there. Edie had lots of fun with all her new toys. She knew right what to do with her baby doll, and when she wasn't dancing to Christmas music, she was strolling her dolly around the house. She even strolled Cisco around!her first doll!

Cisco fits in the stroller too! I think Sadie was jealous...

And finally, to wrap up the Holiday festivities, Grandpa's birthday and birthday party were Dec. 26th. MJ threw Grandpa a nice party, and Edie was quite the little socialite. Showing no shyness at all, she ran from room to room showing off her dancing skills and dragging her little toy turtle around. I'll upload some video in a seperate post. She had a blast, and I think Grandpa did too!

We enjoyed the family around us, and very much missed the family not here with us - but all in all, it was a very Merry Christmas in the Mascarich house this year.

Happy New Year everyone!

16 month Edie update

We finally went for Edie's 15 month well baby check up last week, although she is now 16 months! She is growing like a champ, although still on a munchkin-like scale. She has continued the same growth pattern, so all is good even though she's on the small side. She weighed in at 21 pounds, which is 25% and she is 50% for height (30") and head. She still has a runny right eye though, so our pediatrician sent us to a pediatric opthamologist whom we saw yesterday. She concluded it is most likely a partially blocked tearduct. Usually these things are congenital and clear up on their own by age 1. Edie is a little out of the norm as hers didn't present until 14 months. It is most likely just now presenting because Edie has been congested quite a bit this fall and never really had been before, thus making it even harder for the eye to drain tears. The only way to fix it is surgery, but thankfully it is a very minor outpatient procedure. It does have to be done at the hospital under full anesthesia though, which is always a little scary with little ones. All the symptoms fit, combined with a family history (Uncle Todd had a fully blocked duct he was a baby, and he had the surgery becuase his didn't clear up on its own either). We are going to watch it for 6 weeks just to make sure that's what it is, and then schedule the surgery. We will just have to decide whether to do the surgery at Kosair Children's Hospital or Jewish Medical Center East.

On a happy note, Edie is such a blast to be around and generally a very happy little girl. She just keeps getting more fun. Lately her new favorite things to do are climbing up and down the stairs, climbing on couches, playing in little spaces, running around with her wastebasket on her head (see pic below) which she will do for hours of entertainment, and putting items in bags and running around the house carrying her loaded "purses". We brought home a load of stuff from Sam's earlier this week, and we found her enjoying the box that was perfectly Edie sized...

And here she is donning her favorite hat - the wastebasket!

She chatters all the time but mostly still in her own language, although we do get the occasional mamamama or dadada or ah-de(sadie). She barks when you ask her what Sadie says, and new this week - MJ taught her to meow(and it is the cutest sounding meow!!) when you ask her what Cisco says.

And just as MJ was saying the other day how she is at the age to really get hurt with all the running around, yesterday she slipped on the stairs and bit her tongue pretty badly. It was pretty bloody and she took quite a chunk out of the middle of her tongue. We were both pretty traumatized, but luckily cuts in the mouth tend to heal up quickly on their own and she will be just fine. It hasn't stopped her interest from stairclimbing in the slightest!

Thanksgiving 2009

We went south for Thanksgiving this year, and enjoyed a wonderful holiday with Oma and Opa in Shalimar. The discovery of our packed and ready to go car being broken into made for a bit of a rough start. Thankfully, despite the loss of the DVD player to the thieves, we had a great trip and Edie proved once again to be a pretty easy going traveller. Having Sadie keep her company beats out a movie anyday!

Edie had lots of fun playing at Oma and Opa's. She espescially loved playing in their dining room windows, and really loved to sit on the window sill. I guess it's just the right height.

We had a busy few days at home. Edie ate her first grouper sandwich at Harbor Docks, and went shopping at the outlets. We enjoyed a big Maney family Thanksgiving Dinner, and then thanks to Oma and Opa's babysitting, John and I were able to join the rest of the Maney cousins in a long standing tradition of going to the movies after holiday meal, this time to see The Blind Side.
And the highlight of the trip was the Gulfarium! Edie loved the oversized aquariums, and clapped and danced while watching the sea lion and dolphin shows. She LOVED it! We also made a quick trip to the beach. It was pretty chilly, but Sadie enjoyed it anyway.

Fall 2009

We've had some awesome weather this fall which has let us really enjoy the outdoors. Edie is walking (running) now and loves to play outside. She talks constantly in her own little language, and we think her first word is "ah-dee" (Sadie). She also likes to bark - whenever she sees pictures of dogs, Sadie, or other dogs she lets out an enthusiastic "woof, woof". She loves to carry around her purse, wear round toys as bracelets, climb up the stairs, and dance.

Oma and Opa came to visit for Labor Day weekend and we enjoyed a trip to the zoo.

We got a Wee Ride seat for my bike. She loves to go for rides, espescially when one of us rides and the other runs along side with Sadie. She just giggles and giggles.

Edie went to her first pumpkin patch at Foxhollow Farms in Oldham County.

And for Halloween, she was Batgirl! She was probably the only authentic batgirl out there, with the bat bite to prove it! We escaped the halloween madness of Hillcrest Ave in our neighborhood (6000 trick or treaters!) and went to Grandpa and MJ's house. MJ took her trick or treating at a few houses, and then we handed out candy.

In The Beginning...

I've been meaning to start a blog for a long time now, but I guess the first year and 3 months flew my faster than I could keep up! So, I'll start off by backing up a bit.

After much anticipation, and 7 days past her due date - Edith Elizabeth (named for my maternal grandmother) arrived on July 31, 2008 weighing 8lbs, 8oz and was 21 inches long. Edie has blond hair, blue eyes, a catching smile, and a wonderfully sweet temperment.

Highlights of her first year were:

6 weeks - Baptism and Hurricane Ike hitting Louisville w/ a massive weeklong power outage (luckily for us just one day)

Christmas, 5 months old - first road trip to the Emerald Coast to Oma & Opa's house, and meeting Big Edie (her namesake) for the first time

5 months - Bat Bite & rabies treatment, and Big Snow/Ice Storm with another weeklong power outage

A few of her favorite activities include stroller rides, swinging, swimming at the baby pool, playing with Sadie, and getting in to all kinds of things she's not supposed to!

Here's a slide show highlighting Edie's first year.
